Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is vital to the care of patients who are recovering from an accident, stroke, or neurological disorder, or who are learning to live with a chronic disease.
Our neurologists, neurosurgeons, and physiatrists work together to bring patients back to maximum function through the most advanced technology.

Inpatient Unit at Albany Medical Center
In this unit, patients can receive comprehensive rehabilitation services and still be seen when needed by the doctors who they have seen while hospitalized.
For patients with orthopedic conditions, the team works in collaboration with surgeons to provide optimum wound care and pain control, and to promote walking, self-care skills, and endurance.
Patients who have had a stroke or other neurologic problems are seen by specially trained physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech and language pathologists who have access to the latest technologies, including functional electric stimulation and robotic therapy.
Our physiatrists specialize in restoring optimal function to people with injuries to the muscles, bones, tissues, and nervous system (such as stroke or trauma patients). They routinely assist in the treatment plan of patients diagnosed with the following types of conditions:
- Cerebral palsy
- Cervical dystonia
- Chronic lower back and neck pain
- Chronic pain
- Complex regional pain syndrome
- Multiple sclerosis
- Musculoskeletal disorders
- Peripheral neuropathy

Our physicians can perform certain diagnostic procedures, as well as therapies to help in treating or managing certain neurological conditions such as chronic pain or musculoskeletal disorders. Some of the services and treatment methods provided include:
- Behavioral therapies
