Child-Sized Vehicle Donated to Massry Family Children’s Emergency Center

A child-sized vehicle specifically designed for hospitals was unveiled today at Albany Medical Center. The Capital Region and North Country Honda Dealers in partnership with American Honda’s Project Courage donated the vehicle to the Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital and Massry Family Children’s Emergency Center, which is intended to transport pediatric patients to tests, scans, and procedures. The vehicle, called Shogo, is designed and developed by Honda engineers to bring comfort and joy to patients. Albany Medical Center is the first hospital in New York State to receive a Shogo.
“As the only pediatric emergency department in the region, we work to provide the very best clinical care for children in an environment that is equally suited to their needs,” said Carrie Danziger, MD, division chief of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. “Being in the hospital can be scary for a child. Making it as kid-friendly and fun as possible does so much to enhance their experience. We are grateful to the Capital Region and North Country Honda Dealers and American Honda for helping us care for our children in all aspects.”
The vehicle is designed for patients between the ages of 4 and 9, and up to 75 pounds, who can sit independently. The battery-powered vehicle has an adjustable speed of one to five mph. The patients will drive it with a stop/go mechanism on the steering wheel, but it also has emergency stop buttons and can be pushed by a rear handlebar. It has an IV pole attachment, customizable license plate, and a bucket for toys or stuffed animals to ride along with the patient.
“As Honda dealers and members of this community, we are proud to partner with American Honda and Albany Medical Center to bring the Honda Shogo to the Capital Region,” said Bill Lia Jr., Partner of Lia Honda. “This special vehicle reflects the spirit of innovation and compassion that defines both Honda and Albany Med. We’re honored to support an initiative that brings comfort to children during some of their most vulnerable moments, and we hope the Shogo brings smiles and strength to the young patients and their families.”
The Massry Family Children’s Emergency Center also has a direct connection to the Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital, the region’s only children’s hospital, from which children and families can access care in more than 40 pediatric specialties.
