Albany Medical Center Welcomes New Chair of Urology, Dr. Lara MacLachlan

Urologist Lara MacLachlan, MD, has joined Albany Medical Center and has been appointed Falk Family Chair of the Department of Urology, professor of urology, and chief of the hospital’s urology service. In this role, she becomes Albany Medical Center’s first female chair of urology, and is one of nine women currently serving as chair of urology at an academic medical center in the U.S.

“A respected clinician, educator, and leader, Dr. MacLachlan has built a career developing innovative, patient-centered programs and is widely recognized for her mentorship of and dedication to training the next generation of physicians,” said Alan S. Boulos, MD, ’94, The Lynne and Mark D. Groban, MD ’67 Distinguished Dean of Albany Medical College. “We’re proud to welcome her to Albany Med.”

Specializing in urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery, Dr. MacLachlan cares for women with a wide range of urologic issues, including pelvic organ prolapse, overactive bladder, urinary incontinence, and voiding dysfunction. She also cares for both men and women with urologic concerns caused by neurological conditions, including spinal cord injury, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis.

Most recently, Dr. MacLachlan served as senior staff physician at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington, Mass., where she led Lahey’s educational mission and cared for patients with complex urologic conditions. She previously held academic positions at Tufts University School of Medicine and University of Massachusetts Lahey-Chan Medical School.

As chair, Dr. MacLachlan succeeds Barry Kogan, MD, who retired in October. “Dr. Kogan built a department that has fellowship-trained urologists in every subspecialty of urology,” said Dr. MacLachlan. “I’m looking forward to building further on the programs that are already in place, and to reinforcing the strengths of our providers’ expertise, breadth and quality of clinical research, and the reputation of our residency training program.”

Dr. MacLachlan completed a fellowship in female urology and urogynecology at Medical University of South Carolina, and a residency in urology at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University. She earned her medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine. Board certified in urology, she has also served as a fellow of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) Program and of the American Urological Association Leadership Program. She earned her undergraduate degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and began her career as a research and development engineer with a biomedical device company, where she designed and developed one of the first drug-eluting cardiac stents.

Dr. MacLachlan is seeing patients at Albany Medical Center’s South Clinical Campus, 23 Hackett Blvd., in Albany. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 518-262-3341.
