The C.R. Wood Cancer Center’s clinical genetics service offers hereditary cancer risk assessment, genetic counseling, and genetic testing by an oncology genetics counselor and physician. If you are concerned about your personal or family history of cancer, our experts can help you make medical decisions about how to manage your risk.

Would genetic counseling be helpful to me?

If you answer yes to any of the following questions, genetic counseling may be useful for you:

  • Have you or a close relative been diagnosed with cancer at an early age?
  • Do you have more than one blood relative with the same type of cancer? If yes, is the same type of cancer found in more than one generation?
  • Has anyone in your family had more than one type of cancer, not counting basal cell or squamous cell skin cancers?
  • Are you related to someone who is known to have an inherited mutation that can cause cancer?

If you are interested in learning about your hereditary risk for cancer, we encourage you to speak with your physician about a referral to the oncology genetics program.

Clinical research studies are vital to the process of discovering the safest and most effective cancer therapies for patients. The C.R. Wood Cancer Center currently has approximately 40 national clinical studies available for treatment, quality of life, and prevention. Glens Falls Hospital has partnered with the University of Vermont for shared opportunities in their clinical studies, and the center also participates in clinical studies directly through pharmaceutical companies. The physicians and staff of the C.R. Wood Cancer Center work closely with these organizations, along with the National Cancer Institute, to provide opportunities for local patients to take part in national clinical research studies, without having to travel away from home. These studies provide the opportunity for patients to conveniently receive some of the most leading-edge therapies available, while also allowing them to directly contribute to the ongoing progress being made in the field of oncology. Treatment studies may consist of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation therapy, hormonal therapy, or combination therapy.

View active and/or recruiting clinical trials taking place at the C.R. Wood Cancer Center on ClinicalTrials.gov. Please note that to view completed, inactive, not yet recruiting or terminated clinical trials at the Cancer Center, search parameters will need to be adjusted on ClinicalTrials.gov.

For more information on clinical studies, contact Beth Ann Brundage, RN, at 518-926-6644 or Nannette Oberhelman, at 518-926-6701.

Medical oncology services at the C.R. Wood Cancer Center include chemotherapy, biotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, and clinical trials that treat cancer.

Oncology team members include oncology nurses, a case manager, a health psychologist, a mental health counselor, a social worker, nurse navigators, rehabilitation specialists, an oncology nutritionist, a pharmacist, and spiritual care.

Oncology Certified Nurses

The C.R. Wood Cancer Center employs oncology certified nurses, who have earned a national certification in cancer care from the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation.

Inpatient Care

Glens Falls Hospital’s inpatient cancer unit is located on the second floor of our Tower. In addition to 25 private and semi-private patient rooms, specially designated rooms are available in the inpatient care unit for family visits and private meetings with our staff. Family involvement is a key part of the unit’s approach to inpatient care.

Radiation oncology services at The C.R. Wood Cancer Center include Image-Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT), Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT), Volume Modulated Radiotherapy (VMAT), and brachytherapy. A dedicated group of radiation oncology professionals provide radiation oncology services to our patients.

See more about Radiation Oncology in the Albany Med Health System.

The C.R. Wood Cancer Center has a cancer prevention and early detection program to decrease the incidence of, and mortality resulting from, cancer in our region. Our cancer prevention and early detection efforts increase our ability to detect cancer early, which the American Cancer Society says allows for the most successful treatment of many forms of cancer.

Cancer Screening

We provide breast exams and mammogram, cervical cancer screening, lung cancer screening, skin cancer screening, and colorectal cancer screening. Our Cancer Center also administers a New York State Department of Health program that provides free screening for individuals who qualify and who do not have health insurance coverage. For more information, contact the Cancer Service Program at 1-800-882-0121 or 518-926-6570.

Cancer Awareness

The C.R. Wood Cancer Center provides a number of cancer awareness and educational programs. The goal of these cancer awareness programs is to increase awareness of various types of cancer and to increase cancer screening.

Charles R. Wood (1914-2004) was the founder of Double H Ranch and Chair of the Charles R. Wood Foundation. As founding father of Storytown USA (now Six Flags Great Escape & Splashwater Kingdom) in Queensbury, Charles R. Wood was known as the “Father of Theme Parks.”

In 2001, Charles R. Wood donated $1.4 million – the largest charitable gift from an individual in the history of Glens Falls Hospital – toward a $3.85 million fundraising goal for a new linear accelerator to administer radiation oncology treatments. In recognition of this significant contribution, hospital officials renamed the hospital’s community cancer center in his honor.

Charles R. Wood served as president of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions. He was inducted into the IAAPA Hall of Fame in 1992. He served on the Board of Directors of the Hyde Museum in Glens Falls; the International Board of the Naples Philharmonic Center of the Arts in Naples, Florida; Frederic Remington Art Museum in Ogdensburg; and the Board of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC). He was also an avid collector of Frederic Remington’s sculptures and many other famous works of art.

Charles R. Wood once said, “We do what we can for society, but it must come from our heart.”

Double H Hole in the Woods Ranch

In 1991, Charles R. Wood purchased a 300-acre dude ranch in Lake Luzerne, which is now a summer camp for children with cancer and blood diseases. Double H Ranch welcomes 900 children and teenagers each year at no cost.

To this day, the C.R. Wood Cancer Center hosts Cindy’s Comfort Camp at the Double H Ranch. Cindy’s Comfort Camp is a free, weekend overnight camp for children and teens who have experienced the death of a parent or sibling.
