Robert Schultze, MD

Department of Ophthalmology

Dr. Schultze is director of Cornea, Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the director of the Cornea Fellowship Program at Albany Medical College. He is also director of the TLC Laser Eye Center and the Lions Eye Bank at Albany, and previously served as the Ophthalmology Program Director, director of Medical Student Education in Ophthalmology, and on the board of the Northeastern Association for the Blind at Albany.

He completed his residency and fellowship training in cornea, external disease, and refractive surgery at Albany Medical College. He earned his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine, where he was distinguished with the Lamport Biomedical Research Award, and earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa.

Dr. Schultze has participated in the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Committee on Eye Banks, Annual Program Committee and the Basic and Clinical Science Course Section 2 Committee. For the Eye Bank Association of America, he has sat on the Medical Advisory Board, the Committee on International Relations and has served on its Accreditation Board. Dr. Schultze serves the American Board of Ophthalmology as a Special Examiner and on the Question Writing Committee.

Dr. Schultze is one of only 50 U.S. surgeons to serve as a VISX and an Intralase Trainer, who proctors other surgeons on the use of lasers. He was the first surgeon in the area to perform CustomLasik and blade-free LASIK on a Capital Region patient, has performed thousands of successful laser refractive procedures, and was the first area surgeon to place the Restor multifocal and Verisyse lenses. Dr. Schultze has also been instrumental in the development of DSAEK and DMEK and was the first surgeon in the northeast to perform such procedures. He has participated in several national multi-center trials, including an FDA-monitored trial for excimer laser correction of farsightedness and astigmatism.

Internationally, Dr. Schultz has presented his work in Panama, Greece, China, India, and Italy. He has been recognized with a “Best of Show” award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, as well as “First Place” from the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery for his productions demonstrating his techniques in advanced corneal surgery. He has also been awarded a “Best Paper of Session” award for his research and is a recipient of the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Honor Award and Senior Honor Award for service to the organization. The ophthalmology residents selected Dr. Schultze as the 2013 recipient of the Golden Apple Teaching Award. For his care of patients, Dr. Schultze has been perennially recognized as a Top Doctor by the Consumer Research Council of America and, more recently, by Castle Connolly and Hudson Valley Magazine. He was awarded Professional of the Year by the Northeastern Association of the Blind at Albany in 2014.
