General and Minimally Invasive Surgeon Dr. Kinga Powers Joins Albany Medical Center

General surgeon Kinga Powers, MD, PhD, has joined Albany Medical Center as chief of emergency general surgery and has been appointed associate professor at Albany Medical College.

Dr. Powers is a board-certified general surgeon dedicated to advancing minimally invasive and robotic surgery. She has extensive experience in complex gastrointestinal and abdominal conditions, including abdominal wall and groin hernias, hiatal hernias, and benign esophageal diseases such as GERD and reflux. She also performs revisional and restorative operations for patients requiring expert management after prior procedures. Dr. Powers emphasizes laparoscopic, endoscopic, and robotic techniques, offering individualized, minimally invasive options that minimize pain, shorten recovery, and optimize outcomes for both emergent and non-emergent surgery.

Dr. Powers completed a fellowship in advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at Harvard Medical School. She completed her general surgery residency and a doctoral degree at the University of Toronto, where her award-winning research focused on cell signaling during oxidative stress and shock resuscitation. A native of Canada, Dr. Powers earned her medical degree from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.

Dr. Powers chairs the publications committee for the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons and contributes to several committees focused on surgical education and safety. She has also participated in multiple mission trips to Bolivia and Peru, performing advanced laparoscopic procedures and training local surgeons to build sustainable surgical programs.
