Facility Maintenance Leader Named Employee of the Year

Aaron Pickel, assistant director of facility maintenance, has been named Albany Medical Center’s 2025 Employee of the Year. Pickel, of Delmar, was selected for the honor from 112 nominations submitted for more than 70 colleagues. Pickel was surprised with the award during a leadership meeting Monday, Dec. 15, where he was joined by colleagues and his children.

Executive Vice President and Hospital General Director Jason Mouzakes, MD, said, “Aaron represents the very best of Albany Med. He is a trusted leader, a thoughtful problem-solver, and someone whose impact is felt in every hallway and on every floor. He leads with humility, follows through, and brings out the best in those around him.”

Pickel oversees a team of more than 40 professionals, including electricians, plumbers, carpenters, mechanics, painters, and foremen. Known for his hands-on leadership style, he is frequently seen throughout the hospital checking in with staff, coordinating projects, and ensuring the environment is safe, functional, and ready for staff to care for patients around the clock. He is constantly focused on how patients, families, and staff experience the hospital.

Colleagues consistently describe Pickel as approachable, proactive, and deeply invested in his team’s success. One nominator noted that he, “never walks away when someone needs a hand,” adding that his compassion, accountability, and willingness to jump in alongside his staff make a meaningful difference every day. Another colleague shared that Pickel’s encouragement and belief in his team helped give them the confidence to step into leadership roles themselves.

Beyond ensuring smooth daily operations, Pickel also places a strong emphasis on culture with his team. He encourages staff and offers opportunities to celebrate excellence through his department’s Star Performer program to recognize those who go above and beyond. Even on evenings and weekends, Pickel is a familiar face on campus, overseeing critical projects and partnering closely with other teams to continuously enhance patient care.

His commitment, Pickel said, is rooted in his own experience. After more than a decade at Albany Med, he feels a strong connection to the organization and colleagues who are united under a shared mission.

“I’m truly blown away,” Pickel said. “When I joined Albany Med nearly 12 years ago, I was given opportunities that helped me grow and take on meaningful work, and I’m so honored to receive this award.”
