Endocrine Surgeon Dr. Joshua Chao Joins Albany Medical Center

Endocrine and general surgeon Joshua Chao, MD, JD, has joined the Department of Surgery’s Division of Endocrine Surgery at Albany Medical Center.

Dr. Chao specializes in surgical treatments for adults with benign and malignant thyroid and parathyroid disease. He also focuses on the surgical treatment of diseases such as Cushing’s syndrome, hyperaldosteronism (Conn’s syndrome), pheochromocytoma, and adrenal cancer. He has had extensive training in retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomies, a minimally invasive procedure where the adrenal glands are removed with fewer incisions, in the lower back only. This is often associated with less pain and faster recovery times.

A member of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, Society of Asian Academic Surgeons, Society of Surgical Oncology, and American College of Surgeons, Dr. Chao completed a fellowship in endocrine surgery at University of California, Los Angeles. He completed a residency in general surgery at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, N.J., and earned his medical degree from the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Providence, R.I.

A former practicing attorney, Dr. Chao also has a strong interest in the social determinants of health and institutional barriers to health care, and works with Albany Medical College, Albany Law School, and the Alden March Bioethics Institute to address these challenges.

Dr. Chao is seeing patients at Albany Medical Center’s Surgeons Pavilion, 50 New Scotland Ave., Floor 5, in Albany, and at the Saratoga Springs Specialty Care Center, 377 Church St., Floor 2, in Saratoga Springs. To schedule an appointment or for more information, call 518-262-0940.
