Dr. Nabeel Herial to Lead Comprehensive Stroke Center

Nabeel Herial, MD, MPH, has joined Albany Medical Center, a member of the Albany Med Health System, as director of its Comprehensive Stroke Center, vice chair of the Department of Neurology, inpatient services and chief of the division of vascular neurology. He is associate professor of neurology and neurosurgery at Albany Medical College.
A board-certified vascular neurologist and endovascular neurosurgeon who specializes in the management of vascular diseases of the brain and spine, Dr. Herial’s areas of practice include stroke, brain aneurysm, carotid or vertebral artery stenosis, arterial dissection, arteriovenous malformation, atherosclerotic disease of intracranial and cervical arteries, and other vascular anomalies of the head, neck, and spine.
Dr. Herial comes from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, where he was co-director of the Global Neurology Program, an attending physician at Jefferson-Abington Hospital, and associate professor of neurology and neurosurgery at Sidney Kimmel Medical College.
He completed fellowship training in endovascular neurosurgery and neurovascular critical care at Jefferson Health/Thomas Jefferson University, a fellowship in endovascular surgical neuroradiology/interventional neurology at St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minn., and a vascular neurology fellowship at the University of California San Diego. He completed his residency training in neurology at the University of Toledo College of Medicine in Ohio, where he also received a master’s degree in public health. He received his medical degree from the University of Health Sciences in India.
Dr. Herial has extensive experience in clinical research and has authored over 150 scientific publications. He is a member of several national and international professional societies, including the World Stroke Organization and the American Academy of Neurology, and is actively involved in global health academic and research collaborations.
As a comprehensive stroke center, Albany Medical Center’s stroke team consists of neurologists, neuro-radiologists, neurosurgeons, vascular surgeons, nurse practitioners, rehabilitation specialists, and nurses, advanced practice providers and residents with specialized training in diagnosis and treatment of stroke, making the hospital a resource for its partner hospitals in the Albany Med Health System: Saratoga Hospital, Glens Falls Hospital, and Columbia Memorial Health, as well as other hospitals in a 25-county area that transfer patients to Albany Med for treatment.
