2024 Alpha Omega Alpha Visiting Professor

The Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Theta Chapter will host a series of events with the 2024 AOA Visiting Professor, on Thursday, Nov. 9.

Julie Ann Sosa, MD, the Leon Goldman MD Distinguished Professor of Surgery and Chair, Department of Surgery; Professor, Department of Medicine at the University of California San Francisco, will present:

  • 7 to 8 a.m. (ME 100): Surgical Grand Rounds
    "Rethinking the thinking about differentiated thyroid cancer and its management in 2023"
  • 8 to 9 a.m. (ME 100): Med Student Podcast:
    Discussion with Dr. Sosa (Adam Gross and Lauren Tomlinson)
  • Noon to 1 p.m. (ME 100): Medicine Grand Rounds
    "Crafting new solutions for old challenges with courage and humility"
  • 1 to 2 p.m. (Huyck Auditorium): Medical Student Conference
    An informal discussion with first through third year students concerning the future of medicine and other topics

An endocrine surgeon, Dr. Sosa's research focuses on developing treatments for advanced thyroid cancer and understanding environmental factors that can increase risk for the disease. She earned her medical degree at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she also completed the Halsted residency in general surgery and served as chief resident. She completed a fellowship in clinical research with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation at Johns Hopkins. She has a master's degree in human sciences from the University of Oxford.

A native of Bethlehem, Dr. Sosa is the daughter of Julio Sosa, MD, longtime director of Albany Medical Center's Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory who performed the first balloon angioplasty in 1979. The College's Sosa Academy of Medical Sciences, whose mission is to recognize excellence, reward achievement, and promote innovation, is named in his honor.
