From the Lab to the Next Generation: Summer Program Inspires Future Scientists and Physicians

Seven undergraduate students recently completed 10 weeks of immersive biomedical research at Albany Medical College as part of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology’s Summer Research Program.

“Through research, mentorship, and professional development, this program helps prepare the next generation of scientists and physicians,” said Assistant Professor Whitney Longmate, PhD, who co-directs the summer program with Professor Mike DiPersio, PhD.

Working alongside MCP faculty and trainees, the students participated in hands-on research while learning about careers in the biomedical sciences and medicine through seminars, skills workshops, clinical experiences, and career discussions. The program culminated in formal presentations of their research to the Albany Med scientific community.

“It was a great success again this year and continues to grow,” said Dr. Longmate, who noted the program’s impact is reflected in students’ feedback: All of the survey respondents said the experience exceeded their expectations, strengthened their interest in higher education, and better prepared them for medical or graduate school. They all plan to pursue graduate-level education, including medical, master’s, or doctoral programs.

Selected from a competitive pool of 45 applicants from across the country, the Summer Research Program students received stipend support from The Carl E. Touhey Foundation, The NAMM Foundation, and MCP.
