Trauma Surgeon Dr. Brian Nasca Joins Albany Medical Center

Brian J. Nasca, MD, a trauma, critical care, and emergency general surgeon, has joined Albany Medical Center’s Department of Surgery and has been appointed assistant professor at Albany Medical College. He brings expertise in quality improvement and a focus on robotic-assisted surgery in acute care to Albany Med, the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center and the one of the busiest in New York State.

“I am honored to operate and care for the critically ill and injured in our community during their time of crisis,” he said. “No one expects to require emergency trauma surgery, but we are ready, 24/7 to treat patients and set them on their path to recovery.”

Dr. Nasca completed a surgical critical care fellowship at the University of Michigan; health services and outcomes research fellowship at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago; general surgery residency at Albany Medical College; and da Vinci residency certificate of training equivalency for robotic surgery. Interested in quality improvement work, Dr. Nasca has served as a postdoctoral scholar and research fellow at the Surgical Outcomes and Quality Improvement Center at Northwestern University.

He earned his medical degree at Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.

Dr. Nasca’s research has covered many key topics in trauma care, and he has led research on hospital adoption of balanced blood transfusions and suicidality among surgery residents, published in Surgery and Academic Medicine, respectively.
