E8 is the physical medicine and rehabilitation unit. Patients come to us for two to three weeks of intensive therapy with the goal of getting home to or near their baseline function.
It is a multidisciplinary effort with input from physical, speech and occupational therapy, from nursing, from the medical teams, all overseen by the physiatrists.
Our patients' stays are planned and usually follow a predictable path, allowing staff members time to develop therapeutic relationships and help the patients to achieve their treatment goals.
Special skills include specialized knowledge and clinical skills to provide care for patients with physical impairments, the development of interdisciplinary skills and communication as part of a team treatment environment, ability to build an develop therapeutic relationships with patients and their families, bedside manners and skills will benefit clinicians for their entire careers.
Albany Medical Center is the only Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma centers in the region. We are home to five critical care units where our nurses care for some of the most complex patients, learning specialized skills and advancing in their profession.
B2 SICU / Neuro ICU
D2N Cardiopulmonary Surgery/Vascular ICU
- The Cardiopulmonary Surgery/Vascular ICU unit is a 14-bed unit. The patient population includes cardiac intensive care – AHA 2021 Get with the Guidelines-Heart Failure Gold Plus with Honor, post-operative cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery, CABG, valve repair/replacement, aortic dissections, complex vascular surgery, and cardiac assist devices.
- Nurses will learn special skills including admitting patients directly from the OR post open heart or vascular surgery, device management including CRRT, balloon pumps, impellas, LVADs, spinal drains and ECMO, titration of vasoactive drips to maintain the patient's hemodynamic stability, interpretation of hemodynamic numbers from a PA catheter, and ventilator weaning leading to extubating of patients.
- D2N is looking to hire new graduate nurses! The unit orientation is 16 to 24 weeks and offers a new grad RN residency program.
D2E Coronary Care Unit
- Coronary Care Unit is a 17-bed unit. The patient population includes cardiac intensive care – AHA 2024 Get with the Guidelines-Heart Failure Gold Plus with Honor. It also includes patients with life threatening cardiac dysfunction due to acute MI, heart failure, sudden cardiac arrest, and acute on chronic cardiac conditions.
Special skills include management of devices such as impellas, intra-aortic balloon pumps, pulmonary artery catheters, and transvenous Pacemakers. - Therapies include targeted temperature Management and continuous renal replacement therapy.

In our collaborative acute care environment, our physical therapists play a vital role in interdisciplinary care, working with diverse patient populations and complex conditions. Our physical therapists support patients in regaining mobility, independence, and quality of life.
We also have an 18-bed inpatient acute rehab unit. The rehabilitation team at Albany Medical Center is a multi-disciplinary group, dedicated to meeting the needs of patients who require inpatient rehabilitative therapy in order to reach his/her maximum level of function and independence.
Our radiologic technologists perform technical diagnostic imaging procedures and assist in the clinical evaluation and care of patients both inpatient and outpatient. Albany Medical Center radiographers utilize their skills and knowledge to create diagnostic images and provide their patients with a safe and positive experience. They support teaching and research initiatives in accordance with our institutions’ mission and values, while continuing to learn, teach, and grow as treatment, technology, and technique advances.

Our registered respiratory therapists perform respiratory therapy procedures, cardio-respiratory diagnostics, and patient assessment under the direction of a licensed physician. RT-I’s are capable to assess, treat, and care for patients with breathing disorders. The cardiorespiratory services unit uses state-of-the-art equipment and technology to treat and monitor patients of all ages, both inpatient and outpatient. We take a collaborative team approach to ensure comprehensive patient care. Respiratory therapists also participate in various research studies and collaboratives.
