Specimen Collection: This test should be used for routine screening of stool samples for bacterial, parasitic, and viral pathogens from patients with diarrhea. For inpatients, collect stool in clean leak proof sealed container. For outpatient collection, stool sample must be placed in Cary Blair transport medium (orange capped vial preferred). Rectal swabs accepted for children < 1 year old only if pre-arranged with lab X23511. Samples from inpatients hospitalized > 3 days will not be tested unless the patient's admitting diagnosis was diarrhea.
Minimum Volume: 1 mL liquid or marble-sized sample if solid. If using Cary Blair transport medium (orange capped vial), follow the fill instructions on the container.
Handling Instructions for Offsite Areas: Unpreserved specimen must be received within 2 hours of collection. Stool in Cary Blair transport medium (orange capped vial) is acceptable for up to 3 days.
Reference Values: Detects presence or absence of Campylobacter (jejuni, coli, and upsaliensis, Plesiomonas shigelloides, Salmonella, Vibrio (parahaemolyticus, vulnificus, and cholera), Yersinia enterocolitica, Shiga-like toxin-producing E. coli (STEC 1/2), E. coli O157, Shigella/Enteroinvasive E. coli, Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora cayetanensis, Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, Astrovirus, Sapovirus (I, II, II, IV,V), Rotavirus A, Novovirus GI/GII, Adenovirus F 40/41, Enteroaggregative E. coli, Enteropathogenic E. coli, Enterotoxigenic E. coli
