PARASITOLOGY DETECTION AND IDENTIFICATION

Specimen Collection: Only stool samples from patients with diarrhea and foreign travel/residency, immunodeficiency or unexplained eosinophilia should be tested using this method. Please document relevant patient history in the test order. Collect sample in 1 Formalin ParaPak vial and 1 Zn PVA ParaPak vial. Specimens collected after barium enema are unsatisfactory. Testing will not be performed on stools submitted after 3 days of hospitalization except for those patients with an admitting diagnosis of diarrhea. For pinworms, see Pinworm Prep. Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora, Isospora and Microsporidium are not detected by this test must be requested separately. Contact the laboratory at X23511 for information about parasite detection in specimens not meeting the above criteria or from specimens other than stool.
Minimum Volume: Fill each vial to the line on the label. Containers overfilled with solid stool will not be tested.
Handling Instructions for Offsite Areas: Place sample in O&P transport vials (available through supply order form). Maintain at room temperature. Samples not in transport vials must be received in lab within 30 min of collection.
