CULTURE, BACTERIAL, ANAEROBE without gram stain

Synonyms: Anaerobe Culture
Computer Code: ANACO
Specimen Collection: Collect from deep, anaerobic sites, sterile fluids and aspirates. BAL is unacceptable. Collect >1 mL pus or fluid in syringe. Inject fluid into headspace of anaerobic transport. Tissue: Place in anaerobic transport jar; push large pieces of tissue into media. Lay small pieces on top of media. Wound specimens on swabs have limited value. Collect on swab only if fluid or tissue cannot be sent. Place swab in media in anaerobic transport tube. IF TRANSPORT MEDIA IS UNAVAILABLE, TRANSPORT WITHIN 20 MIN TO THE LAB; OTHERWISE THE SPECIMEN WILL BE UNSATISFACTORY FOR RECOVERY OF ANAEROBES.
Minimum Volume: Fluid minimum 1.0 mL
Handling Instructions for Offsite Areas: All specimens must be received in anaerobe transport media. Maintain transport media at room temperature. Do not refrigerate. Transport within 24 hours. All transport media available from lab at 262-3511.
Reference Values: Anaerobes may be normal flora or pathogens. When collecting specimens, avoid contamination by colonizing flora. COMPARE RESULTS TO ROUTINE, AEROBIC CULTURE.
